Crews continue working to repair the water main on Greenfield Avenue between 86th and 87th Streets. Water service is expected to be restored by 1:30 p.m., with full repairs anticipated by 4 p.m. today.

A 6-foot section of pipe, originally installed in 1924, is being replaced. The break is likely due to the age of the pipe, with recent high temperatures potentially contributing.

Please note:
• The eastbound parking lane between 86th and 87th will remain closed until full pavement restoration, expected as early as next week.
• One eastbound lane and two westbound lanes will be open to traffic in the meantime.
This section of Greenfield Avenue was last resurfaced in 2018 due to roadway conditions. It is owned and maintained by the State of Wisconsin, and resurfacing projects do not include replacement of underground utilities. At this time, we are not aware of any planned road replacement west of 84th Street.

Water main breaks can occur due to several factors, including aging infrastructure, ground shifting, pressure fluctuations, or accidental damage during construction.

We appreciate your patience as we complete this repair. If you have any questions, please direct them to the Water Utility at (414) 302-8830 during regular business hours Mon-Fri from 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

A water main break at 86th & Greenfield Ave has closed the EB lane of Greenfield Ave between 87th and 86th Streets. Two-way traffic will use the WB lane. Expect backups due to the State Fair; Fair traffic should avoid the area for crew safety. Repairs should be done by 3 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 8.

Art on the Plaza + Arts Showcase

On Monday, July 28, around 4:30 p.m., a significant water main break occurred on 118th Street. In response, City crews shut off water service to residences between Cleveland and Harrison on 118th Street and worked diligently through the night and into the morning to restore service.

A large section of the water main pipe cracked and is currently being replaced by a contractor. During the incident, there was also a gas leak, and power was temporarily lost to nearby homes. WE Energies has restored gas and electric service, and the City contractor is actively working to complete the water main replacement. Water service was restored by early this afternoon, Tuesday, July 29.

Due to the extent of the damage, a large section of pavement has already been removed, and additional sections that have been upheaved will also need to be taken out. Barricades and fencing will remain in place for safety, and there will be a full street closure mid-block. While through-traffic will not be permitted, residents should still be able to access their driveways during this time.

We are committed to restoring the pavement as quickly as possible. However, given the scale of the repair work required, it may take approximately 1½ to 2 weeks to complete (from the time of the break).

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to safely and efficiently resolve this situation.

Portion Of Hank Aaron State Trail To Close During Wisconsin State Fair, Alternate Route Available

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in partnership with Wisconsin State Fair Park officials announced that the Hank Aaron State Trail will once again be closed between S. 76th St. and S. 84th St. during the 2025 Wisconsin State Fair to ensure that safety continues to be a top priority. The fair will run July 31 through Aug. 10, 2025.

The Hank Aaron State Trail runs east/west and passes over State Fair Park north of W. Schlinger Ave. west of the Fair Park, Fifth Street within the Fair Park and W. Pierce St. east of the Fair Park. In recent years, State Fair Park Management and Police have worked diligently to secure the entire perimeter of the park by adding metal detectors at all admission entrances, installing more secure fencing, instituting bag size restrictions and reconfiguring gates, entrances and exits. Allowing an elevated trail that runs directly over visitors and vendors at State Fair Park to stay open during the State Fair severely compromises this secure perimeter.

"While we understand the challenges this causes for trail users, I believe this is a necessary security measure that will help to ensure the safety of our fairgoers, exhibitors, vendors, operators and staff," said John Yingling, Chairman of the Wisconsin State Fair Park Board of Directors.

Alternative routes are available in both directions. It is understood that various routes may be utilized based on preference and destination. In advance of the closure, which will begin on July 31 at 8 a.m., State Fair Park staff will post signage on the trail regarding the closure dates and alternate routes. State Fair Park will also be adding additional striping for bike lanes in both directions on North St. (Adler), which runs between the State Fair Park North Parking lot and the UScellular Main Entrance. Additional information can be found online on the Wisconsin State Fair website.

Questions and concerns from the public may be directed to State Fair Park Police at 414-519-7324.
