Last night, Feb. 24, the Common Councils of Wauwatosa and West Allis have each voted to approve an intergovernmental agreement to move forward with the creation of a joint fire department, which will be named Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue. The Wauwatosa Common Council voted 12-2 in favor, and the West Allis Common Council voted 10-0 in favor.
This historic collaboration reflects both communities’ shared commitment to providing cost-effective municipal services, prioritizing fiscal responsibility, and providing excellent fire and EMS services to the community. By merging resources and expertise, Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue will enhance emergency response capabilities while reducing duplication and maximizing taxpayer value.
The next steps in this process are detailed in the timeline available at www.WestAllisWI.gov/FireDepartmentMerger

The nice weather has allowed Public Works crews to continue leaf collection where they left off before Mother Nature decided to snow on us earlier in the season. Crews have transitioned equipment from snowplow & salt spreading trucks to leaf collection and hauling. Track leaf collection at www.WestAllisWI.gov/LeafPickup
In the next few days, West Allis property owners will receive important information in the mail regarding the upcoming City-wide property revaluation. To improve traffic flow and safety, the traffic signal located at 75th Street and Greenfield Avenue was removed and replaced with a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) for pedestrian crossings. Wisconsin state law requires motorists to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. The flashing lights of an RRFB help to increase a motorist’s awareness of a pedestrian crossing. Learn more about the change at www.WestAllisWI.gov/news

Crews are currently working two separate main breaks. The first break is on S. 84th St. and W. Hayes. Traffic on S. 84th St. is being split to maintain one lane of traffic in each direction. The second break is located on S. 82nd St. just north of W. Oklahoma Ave. Crews anticipate both breaks to completed by 6 p.m. today. Pavement repair will take place tomorrow and both locations will be fully open to traffic by Friday morning.
