The West Allis Forestry Division has scheduled the removal of several large trees in the 1700 block of S. 60th Street. These trees must be removed due to significant sidewalk damage caused by their root systems. We have evaluated and considered all available options to preserve these trees; however, for stability and safety reasons, removal is the best course of action.
We are coordinating the removal of the damaged sidewalks as soon as possible. The designated sidewalk sections and trees marked with orange paint will be removed. Crews will then grind the stumps and remaining roots. After this work is completed, the Street Division will replace the damaged sections of sidewalk. New trees will be ordered and planted next spring. The replacement trees will be appropriately sized for the terrace to help prevent similar issues in the future.
Residents will not be assessed for the removal or installation of these sidewalk areas.
During these operations, S. 60th Street, from W. Mitchell Street to W. Burnham Street, will be closed during the day and reopen in the evening. A map of the detour route is included with this letter. Parking will NOT be allowed on S.60th Street, day or night for the duration of the project. “No Parking” signs will be posted on S. 60th Street as well as locations along the detour route to ensure the work can be completed safely and efficiently.
It is important that no vehicles are parked within the posted area, as this may delay the operation. Please notify friends and family who may visit your home or business. The road closure is expected to last three days. Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 19th weather pending.
If you have any questions, please contact the Forestry Office, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 414-302-8811.
