To improve traffic flow and safety, the traffic signal located at 75th Street and Greenfield Avenue was removed and replaced with a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) for pedestrian crossings. Wisconsin state law requires motorists to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. The flashing lights of an RRFB help to increase a motorist’s awareness of a pedestrian crossing.
As part of the Greenfield Avenue corridor review for the upcoming reconstruction project (scheduled around 2030), the Wisconsin Department of Transportation analyzed traffic operations along Greenfield Avenue. The study found that several intersections could function without signals, including S. 75th Street. Further review during I-94 freeway planning showed that the signal at S. 75th Street caused traffic backups into the nearby S. 76th Street intersection, especially during peak hours.
This change was funded through a traffic mitigation agreement tied to freeway work, which also included upgrades to signal equipment along Greenfield Avenue. Greenfield Avenue serves as an alternate route during I-94 construction, so traffic volumes have increased. We will continue monitoring conditions and make adjustments as needed.
