January 12 Community Update

WEEKLY COMMUNITY UPDATE

MLK JR. DAY JAN 17 – NO GARBAGE/RECYCLING COLLECTION; CITY BUILDINGS CLOSED

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, City facilities will be closed. Public Works offices are closed and garbage and recycling will not be collected Monday, Jan. 17. Due to the January pilot program (see below), if your collection day is Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, your garbage collection will be skipped and will be collected the following Monday and your recycling collection will be collected two weeks later at the normally scheduled time.

Please note the following closures:

  • The Municipal Yard will be closed to accept drop-off materials on Saturday, Jan. 15 and Monday, Jan. 17.
  • Other City facilities will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, including West Allis City Hall, West Allis Public Library, and the West Allis Senior Center.

JANUARY PILOT PROGRAM FOR GARBAGE & RECYCLING CHANGES

Under this January pilot program, garbage/recycling collection will be skipped on any holidays, and also skipped on weather-impacted days. Garbage and recycling will then be collected a week later during the standard collection time.

For example, let’s say your garbage collection day is typically on Monday. Your garbage collection this Monday is skipped and will be collected the following Monday and your recycling collection will be collected two weeks later at the normally scheduled time. This change allows the City to save a minimum of $4,500 in overtime costs in one day, to not over-strain a Public Works employee during a holiday week, to prevent injury or harm that often occurs during long hours, and more.

2022 GARBAGE & RECYCLING CALENDAR NOW AVAILABLE

The 2022 garbage and recycling collection schedule is now available at www.westalliswi.gov/dpw. Feel free to print out a calendar and post it somewhere in your house.

As a reminder, garbage is collected weekly from one, two, and three-family residences. Recyclable materials are collected from one, two, three, and four-family residences bi-weekly. Recyclable materials are collected on the same day as the regular garbage collection.

Except for the MLK Jr. Day Pilot Program, major holidays and snow events may impact collection schedules.  Please remember to make your garbage accessible to crews at an alley or curb location by 7 a.m. on the assigned day of collection.

Find your pick-up day by looking up your address in our Property Search tool at http://apps.westalliswi.gov/property_search/search.aspx
