Business Occupancy Permits
The City of West Allis Revised Municipal Code requires a Certificate of Business Occupancy be obtained before engaging in any business activity on any premises in the City. Business Occupancy Application is now online and can be found at www.westalliswi.gov/newbusiness.

Occupancy fees are based on the size of the space being occupied and payment is accepted upon application in the form of cash/check (debit/credit cards are not accepted).  A breakdown of these fees is available on the cover letter of the Business Occupancy Application.

Occupancy Permit Inspection Appointments
When a completed application form is submitted with the required fees, the Building Inspection Department will schedule an appointment for inspection. Inspection appointments are generally scheduled within two weeks of application submittal. Appointments will be scheduled for a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 9:30 -10:30 am or 2:30 - 3:30 pm.

Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Health, and Fire Inspectors will each review the site and area associated with the occupancy application within the one hour inspection window. Inspectors do not come together so there must be someone available to let them enter the space during the alotted one hour window.

All five (5) inspectors must approve occupancy before the final Certificate Of Occupancy will be issued.

Information provided on this site is not intended to answer all questions concerning occupancy permits. If you have any additional questions concerning this process, please contact the Department of Building Inspection and Neighborhood Services.
